My Quest to Solve the Hormone Puzzle and Preserve Aging (And Why Your Doctor Might Be Wrong)

The Personal Crisis That Led Me Here

by Nasly Duarte

Let me be blunt: I've been in hormone hell for months, and the medical system has failed me Again.!!

Low testosterone. Low cortisol. Thyroid dysfunction. The trifecta of feeling like absolute garbage while being told I'm "not sick enough" to deserve treatment.

The first traditional doctor I saw told me I'd need a pap smear and mammogram before she'd even consider hormone replacement therapy. Never mind that I haven't had a pap smear in years and have never had a mammogram. The unspoken message was clear: prove you deserve healthcare by submitting to procedures I'm not comfortable with.

The second doctor, a holistic functional medicine practitioner, told me I needed to "fix my adrenals" before she could prescribe testosterone. Which sounds reasonable until you remember that testosterone isn't only made by the adrenals. Our ovaries produce testosterone too. But apparently, nuance doesn't fit neatly into treatment protocols.

So here I am, a health researcher and biohacker, with clear lab evidence of hormone dysfunction, being told to wait. To jump through more hoops. To "qualify" for help.

I refuse to accept that.

This is me documenting my journey to solve this puzzle myself. Because if the medical system won't help me, I'll do what I always do: research the hell out of it, connect the dots, and share what I learn with other women who refuse to suffer in silence.

The Book That Changed Everything

Then I found Dr. Jeff T. Bowles' work on the hormonal aging program. And suddenly, everything clicked.

For decades, the medical establishment has treated aging as a mysterious, unsolvable problem. A series of random failures. An "accidental artifact" of living longer than nature intended. The "wear and tear" theory suggests we simply fall apart because evolution didn't care about us after our reproductive prime.

But Dr. Bowles presents data that tells a much darker, more deliberate story: aging isn't an accident. It's a hormonal execution.

Look at the Pacific Salmon. After three years of life, they return to their spawning grounds, reproduce, and undergo catastrophic physical meltdown, dying within three days. If you castrate these salmon (removing the hormonal triggers), they don't die. They live for seven years instead of three.

This isn't biology failing. It's programmed biological sabotage.

The question became: do humans have a similar program? And more importantly, can we hijack the code?

Discovery #1: Aging Is a Program, Not an Accident

The scientific paradigm is shifting. Younger researchers now see aging as a "seamless mechanism." The same developmental programs that drive puberty and growth don't just stop once you're adult. They keep running, eventually driving the body into decline.

In humans, the program is more gradual than the salmon, but the mechanics are identical: an aggressive surge and depletion of specific chemical messengers.

This hit me hard. Because what I'm experiencing isn't just "getting older." It's the beginning stages of this program kicking in. My body is actively reducing the protective hormones (testosterone, progesterone, pregnenolone) while ramping up the destructive ones.

And the medical system is telling me to wait until I'm "bad enough" to treat.

Discovery #2: The Master Clock Is Melatonin

Melatonin isn't just a sleep aid. It's the body's primary "hormonal clock" and the first domino in the aging cascade.

Here's what blew my mind: the shrinking nighttime melatonin peak is the trigger for the entire aging program. As these peaks diminish with age, the "bad" hormones spiral out of control.

In his 1997-2001 rat experiments, Bowles found that water restriction led to even longer lifespans than food restriction, likely due to the massive surge in melatonin and DHEA it triggers. In survival states, melatonin levels shoot far higher than youthful peaks, leading to a 40% increase in lifespan.

This is the first piece of my puzzle. If melatonin is the master suppressor of aging hormones, boosting it aggressively might reset the entire system.

Discovery #3: The Brain Protectors We're Losing (Progesterone & Pregnenolone)

As the aging program accelerates, our "good" hormones crash first. Pregnenolone (the "super-memory hormone") and progesterone (arguably the most neuroprotective substance known) both plummet.

The data on progesterone is staggering:

  • Women naturally have higher levels, which explains why they recover from brain injuries more effectively than men
  • Men develop ALS at a 4-to-1 ratio compared to pre-menopausal women
  • Once women hit menopause and progesterone crashes, that ratio shifts to 1-to-1

Progesterone isn't just a "female hormone." It's a biological shield against neurodegeneration.

This explains so much about what I've been feeling. The brain fog. The difficulty concentrating. The sense that my mental sharpness is slipping. It's not in my head. My body is literally withdrawing the hormones that protect my brain.

Discovery #4: The 1,000% Surge of "Bad" Hormones (FSH & LH)

If melatonin and progesterone are the shields, Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormone (LH) are the executioners.

After age 50, these hormones don't just increase. They surge by as much as 1,000%.

Bowles proposed the LH-Alzheimer's link back in 1998 and was laughed at by the scientific community. Decades later, the NIH finally agreed. These "bad" hormones drive:

  • Alzheimer's Disease: High LH levels drive catastrophic brain changes
  • Osteoporosis: High FSH levels directly implicate bone density loss
  • Joint Destruction: FSH is linked to destruction of both heads of the femur, likely driving the epidemic of knee and hip replacements

As Bowles writes: "The NIH, not too long ago, has agreed that LH is intimately involved in driving the attack on the brain that causes Alzheimer's."

My First Experiment: DHEA-F

Last month, I tried 25mg of DHEA-F, a blend containing wild yam root, false unicorn root, and chaste tree berry concentrate.

For the first time in years, my period felt manageable. Not perfect, but dramatically better. Less pain, more stable mood, more energy.

It was the first tangible proof that I'm on the right track. That my body responds to hormone support when given the right tools.

But DHEA-F is just one piece. If Bowles is right about the entire hormonal program, I need to address the master clock itself.

The Protocol: Reversing the Clock with High-Dose Melatonin

To stop the aging program, you don't just "supplement" melatonin for sleep. You use it as a pharmacological tool to crush the 1,000% surge of LH and FSH.

The results can be radical. There are documented cases where high-dose melatonin has "reversed menopause," reinitiating the menstrual cycle by suppressing FSH and LH to pre-menopausal levels.

Bowles suggests the following daily dosages:

For Women:

  • Melatonin: 75mg (at night)
  • DHEA: 25-50mg
  • Pregnenolone: 100-200mg

The caveat: be prepared for a 4-month adjustment period. During this time, your body will demand significantly more sleep as it recalibrates.

The "Winter Gene" Theory

The logic makes evolutionary sense. Melatonin is the "Winter/Famine" hormone, while Vitamin D3 is the "Summer/Abundance" hormone.

During harsh winters or famines, melatonin rises to signal survival mode. This is why high doses can temporarily reduce sex drive at first but it eventually balances itself out after 4 months.

By mimicking these evolutionary "survival conditions," we trigger the mechanisms that slow the aging program.

My Plan: Documenting the Journey

Here's what I'm doing, and I'll be documenting the entire process:

Phase 1 (Months 1-2): Building the Foundation - Melatonin Therapy

  • Start with 25mg melatonin, gradually increasing to 75mg
  • Continue DHEA-F at 25mg
  • Add pregnenolone at 100mg
  • Resveratrol  at
  • Track sleep, energy, mood, menstrual cycle changes

Phase 2 (Months 3-4): The Adjustment Period

  • Increase sleep as needed (Bowles warns this is necessary)
  • Monitor for any negative reactions
  • Adjust dosages based on how I feel

Phase 3 (Month 5+): Retest and Evaluate

  • Get hormone panels redone
  • Compare before/after data
  • Share results with you

I'm also planning to add Fo Ti root, which Bowles identifies as the #1 anti-aging herb in Chinese medicine. Structurally similar to Resveratrol, it's traditionally used to reverse gray hair to its original color.

The Biohacker's Economics

One quick note on cost: encapsulated vitamins are a massive rip-off. Vitamin K2 in pill form can cost 30 times the price of gold per gram.

I buy pure bulk powders, cutting costs by 90% or more. If you're going to experiment with high-dose protocols, this is the only financially sustainable way to do it.

Why I'm Sharing This

I'm documenting this for every woman who's been told:

  • "You don't qualify for treatment"
  • "Your labs are borderline, not bad enough"
  • "Just wait and see"
  • "Have you tried meditation?"

I'm doing this for the health geeks, the biohackers, the women who refuse to accept suffering as inevitable.

I'm doing this because someone needs to connect the dots publicly. To show that the medical system's gatekeeping is arbitrary. That the science exists. That we can take control of our own biology.

The Bigger Question

If aging is a biological program we can now identify, quantify, and suppress, the choice becomes ours.

I don't know yet if this protocol will work for me. I don't know if I'll see the dramatic reversal Bowles describes. But I know the medical system has no better answers for me right now.

So I'm running the experiment on myself.

I'll report back every step of the way. The wins, the failures, the adjustments, the data.

Because if I can solve this puzzle for myself, I can help you solve it too.

And that's what Girl Gone Verde has always been about: practical solutions, real data, and refusing to accept "no" when the science says "maybe."

Next Steps:

  • I'll be posting monthly updates on my hormone journey
  • If you're experiencing similar issues, drop a comment. Let's solve this together.
  • If you want detailed protocol breakdowns, research summaries, and early access to my results, Join the BMAC membership. www.buymeacoffee.com/girlgoneverde

The medical system may not be ready to help us. But we're ready to help ourselves.

Let's rewrite the code together.
